The chain of definitions runs like this. In 1959, six nations signed a document that said: 1 yard = 0.9144 meter exactly. From that one sentence, everything followed. A foot is one-third of a yard: 0.3048 meter. An inch is one-thirty-sixth of a yard: 25.4 millimeters. A mile is 1,760 yards — a number Elizabeth I's Parliament fixed in 1593 — so a mile is 1,760 × 0.9144 = 1,609.344 meters. The mile had been defined in yards since 1593. The yard had been defined in meters since 1959. The meter has been defined by the speed of light since 1983. So the mile is now, indirectly, defined by the speed of light. The US kept a ghost. The old Mendenhall foot — the one that made a mile roughly 1,609.3472 meters — was retained for surveying. Retracting every property boundary in the country to the new foot would have cost billions and broken every deed in the chain of title.
