Where the Ton Came From
In the decades before mechanical refrigeration, an entire industry harvested lake and river ice in winter, stored it in sawdust-insulated icehouses, and sold it through the summer. Cooling capacity was quoted the way it was physically delivered: in tons of ice. One short ton — 2,000 pounds — of ice absorbs 144 BTU per pound as it melts, or 288,000 BTU in total. Spread that melting over a day and you get 288,000 ÷ 24 = 12,000 BTU per hour, the number that still rates every residential air conditioner in America. When Willis Carrier and the early compressor builders arrived, they kept the unit so customers could compare a machine against the ice they already understood.

Notice the ton is not a weight, and it does not tell you anything about the machine's physical size. A 3-ton system removes heat at the rate three tons of ice would, but it is a steel box weighing a few hundred pounds, not six thousand. The square-footage estimates in the table are rules of thumb that ignore climate, insulation, and ceiling height — a real load calculation runs through Manual J, and the ton rating is just its final answer, rounded to the nearest half-ton.

The reverse direction is ton to BTU/h. To see a ton rating in SI power, convert through BTU/h to kW — a 3-ton system is 10.55 kW of cooling — or read it in BTU/h to watts.
